Anne at 9 months

Anne had her 9-month checkup this morning (rescheduled from last week's thundersnow). She demonstrated for the doctor how she says, "Da-da-dee-dee-da-da." Anne also held it together fairly well -- she gets shots each month because it's her first cold and flu season, so she knows what's coming.

Here are her vitals.

Weight: 15 lbs, 2 oz
Height: 26 inches
Head circumference: 43.3 centimeters

She's gained one pound and 13.5 ounces since her 6-month appointment in October ... but she's two inches taller! Her weight gain has definitely slowed, but neither her doctor nor we are worried about it, since Anne is growing taller and her head is growing, too (2.3 centimeters since October). Grandma Gloria reminds us that Mom weighed 15 pounds till she was 2 years old. So Anne's small size might have nothing to do with her prematurity.

What does Anne do at 9 months of age? Her doctor asked this morning; here's what Mom said:

Sits unsupported
Tries to crawl; she rocks on hands and knees and grunts in frustration
Is starting to try to pull up -- on mom's lap, on her Exersaucer, on the coffee table, on the chair
Turns the page of the book when Mom prompts her -- really! ("Anne, help Mommy turn the page.")
Eats all orange veggies, green beans, oatmeal and lots of veggie/fruit blends
Turns up her nose at most fruit
Wants to hold her food bowls/jars and gets upset if we don't let her
Enjoys teething biscuits
Is trying to figure out what to do with cereal puffs
Likes trying to drink water from real glasses; she practices daily
Is learning to drink water from her sippy cup
Happily lets Mom and Dad squirt saline in her nose and suction it
Opens her mouth to take her twice daily medicine

More sitting, and a tooth!

Tuesday was really the day that Anne started sitting up by herself for very long stretches of time, without falling over and without protest. She still hasn't pushed herself up to sit, but that will happen soon. Here she is looking in the mirror. In other news ... Daddy discovered tooth No. 3 tonight! It's the upper left canine.

Anne sits up with her new dog friend

If you know us at all, you know we had a Dalmatian who was not kid-friendly. But our friends gave Anne a toy Dalmatian for her baptism. Mommy has named him Harmless, for obvious reasons. Of course, the big news in this video is not the dog, but the child who is sitting up without any help. Look, Ma, no hands!

Eight months of Anne

Anne will see the doctor later this week for her 9-month checkup, so we'll have some vitals for you then. In the meantime ...

Look out!

Anne will be 9 months old in just a couple of days ...

Anne gets some religion

Anne really enjoyed her baptism on Sunday, Jan. 16, and so did we. We were lucky to have lots of family in town and to have several friends join us for the big event. Anne finally got to meet her cousins Brian (her godfather) and Felicia. She got to see her Aunt Sarah (her godmother) and Uncle Brian again. She got to meet her Great Aunt Pam. And, of course, she had lots of quality time with all her grandparents.

Just in time for a big family visit, a developmental milestone

Ironically, the milestone is stranger anxiety, which unfortunately is happening even with familiar people. Anne gets upset and cries when someone new, or someone she hasn't seen for a while, holds her (or in one case, reached out to touch her).

The good news is it's perfectly normal and is supposed to be an important cognitive advance. The bad news is Anne will have lots of family visiting this weekend for her baptism!

Best advice mom has found so far is to give Anne a little space and time; let her get used to people for 20 or 30 minutes before handing her over to be held.

(Stranger anxiety does not appear to happen with dogs, by the way!)

Boo-boo-buh-buh

That seems to be Anne's favorite sound. That, and gee-gee-gee. And the occasional shriek! This video isn't the BEST representation of her chattiest self, but it's the best we've got so far ...

Christmas with Gram Sheri and Grandpa Dan

Christmas came early for Anne this year -- Gram Sheri and Grandpa Dan arrived on Dec. 22nd to spend the holiday with Anne. Anne liked playing on the floor with Grandpa Dan, flirting with Gram Sheri and having both of them watch her eat. She loved the wrapping paper on Christmas morning, but she also really liked her new toys and understood they were for her (isn't everything?).

Anne had some friends over for New Year's Day. Big dog is Layla. Small dog is our new friend Vita.
